Become a work of art

Anthony Gormley's One & Other
What: Anthony Gormley's One & Other
Where: Trafalgar Square
When: 1st July to 14th October
Not just 15, but 60 whole minutes of fame can be yours. This is an unprecedented chance to take your place alongside Nelson, as part of Anthony Gormley's new artwork. The sculptor proposes to fill the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square with individuals, for 24 hours over 100 days. Each participant occupies the space (1.7m by 4.5m) for one hour. Register online at 'One & Other' and you could get a place on the plinth - people are selected at random every month. What you do is up to you, so long as it's legal, but you must be alone and only take what you can carry. Pic © Cog Design 2009. While you're there: Be inspired by cutting-edge art (or have a beer) at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA, the Mall).

Punting in Oxford

Punting on the Cherwell
What: Punting on the Cherwell
Where: Oxford
When: to mid-October
What could be more summery and sweetly civilised than a lazy punt along the Cherwell River in Oxford? Don your boater and your summer dress, pack up your picnic, and head down to mess about on the river. Don’t forget the champagne and the ice box. You can hire punts from the Cherwell Boat House for £12/14 per hour during the week/weekends. The slow-moving river is ideal for this most graceful of boating activities, and if you head upstream you'll pass the Victoria Arms, a sublime place for summer lunches, with a terrace and lawns stretching down to the riverside. While you're there: Meander around Britain's oldest botanical garden, dating from 1621 and filled with over 7000 different types of plant.

Glorious Gower Festival

What: Gower Festival
Where: Gower Peninsular, Wales
When: 18th to 31st July
Glorious Gower Festival
The Gower, that finger of land gesticulating just beyond Swansea, is one of Wales' most magical corners, a wild combination of beaches, sea cliffs and rolling meadowlands. It feels more like an island than part of the mainland, and retains its sense of remoteness despite the summer crowds. There is only one thing lovelier than being on the Gower in July, and that is to be here in July during the Gower Festival, when there are beautiful classical recitals taking place in its village churches: you can listen to a Bach choir, string quartet or piano trio before heading out to sip chilled white wine on the beach. While you're there: Ride Britain's most splendid surf at Rhossili Bay, with the help of schools such as Gower Surfing Development.

Sziget does it better

What: Sziget Festival
Where: Budapest, Hungary
When: 12th to 17th August
Sziget Festival
There aren't many festivals you approach via a narrow metal bridge, and this is just the start of the charms of the Sziget Festival. The festival occupies an entire wooded island in the Danube, between Buda and Pest. Music is almost an afterthought, there's so much going on, from Vietnamese water puppet extravaganzas to a puzzles tent, and you can even get married here. But if you find time for the music, choices include Faith No More, the Manic Street Preachers, the Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, the Klaxons , Bloc Party, The Ting Tings, the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold. Tickets cost €180 / €150 camping / non-camping, and a pint of beer costs €1.50! While you're there: Slew off the festival grime at one of Budapest's thermal baths, such as the magnificent colonnaded Gellert.
